Joshua Tree Hiking Couple’s Session

Joshua Tree is the perfect park for an adventurous (but not too adventurous) hiking couple’s or engagement session.

You’re probably asking yourself what that even means.

Well, to put it bluntly, I couldn’t climb up a rock wall if I tried and as much as I love hiking, I gravitate towards easy, but wildly rewarding treks for photo shoots.

Here’s what you should know when considering Joshua Tree as the backdrop for your photo session.

Pros of Joshua Tree Engagement Photos:

  • Easily Accessible
  • Variety of Landscapes (Cacti, Desert, Mountains, Boulders and of course, JOSHUA TREES!)
  • No Cell Service – This can also be a con, but it’s on the pro’s list because it gives you a chance to just be and appreciate nature without being constantly connected.
  • Unique and Affordable AirBNB’s! – We stayed in a yurt just outside of the park. This was arguably one of the best parts of my trip.
  • Rock Climbing… if you’re into that kind of thing.
  • Minimal Light Pollution. This means incorporating some astrophotography or stargazing into your Joshua Tree engagement photos is a possibility. Who’s in?!
  • No Mosquitos. You fellow midwesterner’s understand me here.
  • Occasional Snow in Winter – This doesn’t happen often, but if you’re lucky enough to visit during a rare snowfall, consider yourself lucky.

Con’s of Joshua Tree Engagement Photos:

  • Hot Summers
  • Snakes, Scorpions + Black Widow Spiders – Although I didn’t see any during our trip. The park is home to 7 varieties of rattlesnakes.
  • No Cell Service – Can also be a plus! Just be sure to download any maps you might need in a neighboring city before entering the park.
  • No Water in the Park

I never knew it until I began exploring, but I have a love for the desert and the uniqueness tones this type of landscape brings to my photos.
